Update Galaxy W I8150 to Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean using RootBox Custom ROM

Our plan for this tutorial revolves around info on how to update Samsung Galaxy W I8150 to Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean with a custom ROM baptized RootBox. This is an unofficial tool, but we didn’t come across major problems when testing it (we’ll mention the small ones we stumbled upon a bit later).

Some of the features that you will get to experience once you find out how to work your way around this ROM are Wi-Fi, Phone, mass storage and so on. They all work very well. You may experience issues with the camera and the GPS, but other than that there are no bugs and no other such problems.

Requirements

To get you in the mood before we indicate the steps necessary for this guide, here are our usual pre-requisites: be sure to use a tutorial on how to root the smartphone and how to install ClockworkMod Recovery on it, charge the battery of the handset, go and make as many backups as you think are needed, use a Galaxy W GT-I8150 that is unlocked, turn on the option that’s called USB debugging and install USB drivers on your laptop (make sure they are fit for this particular handset).galaxy-w-gt-I8150

Important instructions

After settling the matter of requirements, what’s left are those steps which help with the installation of the update.

  1. The first of them urges you to and GApps from here on your laptop, then plug the latter to the smartphone. You can now go to the second step, which tells you this: move the Android 4.2.1 ROM and the Google Apps zip files from their initial location to the memory card of the Galaxy W I8150.
  2. Now do the following: switch the smartphone off, then unplug it from the computer and enter it in Recovery Mode; here’s the procedure on how to perform the latter: turn on the handset while at the same time pressing and holding the buttons for Home, Volume Up and Power.
  3. Step three will need you to choose Factory Reset/Wipe Data with Power. After the full phone’s data wipe is done, you have to opt for Wipe Cache Partition. The phone will now go through a cache wipe procedure and when that’s done, you will need to generate a full wipe of the dalvik cache by going to the recovery menu and finding Advanced, then opting for Wipe Dalvik Cache. After that’s over with, you should return to the main recovery screen, choose Install zip from SD card, then opt for Choose zip from SD card.
  4. [sc name=”banner-jos”]The fourth step will tell you this: go and locate the Android 4.2.1 ROM zip file. When you spot it, use Power to choose it, then confirm this. After the file is flashed on your W I8150, you have to also install the Gapps zip file by finding the Google Apps package and opting for it with the same Power key. Now confirm the installation.
  5. Next up is step five: go to +++++Go Back+++++.
  6. Choose, from the recovery menu, the system restarting; after the Galaxy W I8150 reboots, it will also have the Android 4.2.1 JB on it. Which was possible thanks to the RootBox custom ROM.
