Update Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 to Jelly Bean 4.1.1 using Shri Chanakya ROM

Since there are still many smartphones and tablets which function with the old Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and since the Jelly Bean version has already been released, many gadget owners want it on their own devices. But manufacturers are still late with the update. So developers on the XDA Developers forum thought of creating custom ROMs that offer this possibility if you are impatient. And we will talk about such a tool in today’s How to.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 T989 did not receive an upgrade to the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean OS. However, you can do that on your own with the help of Shri Chanakya ROM. This is a CyanogenMod 10-based custom ROM that was created by shri_chanakya, a member on the XDA Developers forum. But it’s not the official version that is free of bugs and other unwanted problems. Fear not: the latter are not that serious and they won’t damage your device.

Requirements

But you shouldn’t install this custom ROM without being aware of the the instructions needed beforehand and the necessary warning. The instructions are the following. The phone should come with ClockworkMod Touch Recovery on it. The next requirement is to download these two files to a laptop: Shri Chanakya CM10 ROM for the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 (a file called shri_chanakya-20120923.zip) and GApps package from here, for the Galaxy S2 (a file called gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip).

Immediately after this create a backup in which you must include things like passwords for your Wi-Fi, text messages, contacts and other very important stuff. Last but not least, the battery of the Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 has to be either fully charged or over 70% charged. This will prevent the phone from dying on you during the installation process. Then there is the warning part per say: the smartphone that should be used for the Shri Chanakya ROM must be the Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 and you must follow every single installation step we prepared for you.Samsung-Galaxy-S2-T989
