Update Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 to Jelly Bean 4.2.2 Avatar ROM 2.4b

Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 (the AT&T version) won’t need much to get an update to the latest Android version. Just a couple of pre-requisites and steps. To get to them safely, you will have to rely on our guide for today.

Requirements

The requirements are as follows: turn on USB debugging, charge the device’s battery, use a factory unlocked Galaxy S3 I747, take your laptop and flash USB Drivers for the phone on it and backup the data on it (the one which you consider crucial). Now find Google Apps from here (you must choose a file labelled gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip) and and install them on the laptop.

Should you experience an error that reads as Status 7, you are required to install a related firmware before you get to flash the ROM needed for the update. If you see a boot loop or the smartphone refuses to come out of a Boot, you need to perform Wipe Dalvik Cache and Wipe Cache Partition.Galaxy-S3-I747

If everything goes smoothly, though, simply follow the steps below.

Important instructions

  1. Plug the S3 I747 to your laptop after the two files are downloaded on it. Now copy and then paste the files from the desktop of the computer to the phone’s memory card root. Unplug the devices from one another as soon as the Gapps and the AvatarROM are transferred to the correct location.
  2. Power the handset off.
  3. Press and hold Volume Down, Volume Up and Power at the same time and let go of Power after the display of the phone flashes. Now you are in Recovery Mode.
  4. Operate a NANDroid backup using our tutorial. When you’re done, return to the main recovery menu and opt for Factory Reset/Wipe Data, choose Yes, go back to the ClockworkMod Recovery menu again and choose Wipe Cache Partition.
  5. Step five will tell you that you also need to choose Wipe Dalvik Cache.
  6. After all these three wiping tasks are completed, the sixth step will sound like this: choose Install zip from SD card. The second you are done with that, you will have to opt for Choose zip from SD card and look for the AvatarROM v2.b4 archive.
  7. Upon locating it, the seventh step will tell you to choose this file with Power and confirm the installation. Flash the Google Apps package by doing what you did for the sixth and seventh step; but be careful to choose the correct archive, not the other file.
  8. Let’s see what step number eight has to say next: wait until each of the files from before is flashed on the S3 SGH-I747, then return to the main recovery menu. Choose the system restarting; this is very useful to do, because it will help the handset reboot faster.
  9. [sc name=”banner-jos”]Step nine will look like this: have patience until the smartphone finishes its rebooting, then simply see what an update to the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean is all about.

If you plan on coming back to the device’s previous ROM because you don’t like what the upgrade has done to it, you have to take the following steps:

  1. The first one tells you to boot the SGH-I747 into a mode called Recovery.
  2. Choose Backup&Restore.
  3. A list containing the name of the ROM will appear. Opt for it.
